Google AI Overviews: how to show up in them

AI Overviews are the AI-written answer at the top of Google with a few sources cited inside, and this guide explains how they work and how to structure your content to get cited in them.

Key takeaways

  • AI Overviews are the AI-written answer at the top of Google, with a few sources cited inside.
  • You don’t need to rank number one to be cited, they often pull from pages well below position one.
  • What gets you cited is a clear, extractable answer, not just a high position.
  • The move is to structure for extraction and to measure your presence over time.

If you’ve searched Google recently, you’ve seen them: a short, AI-written answer sitting above the usual results, with a handful of links cited inside it. Those are AI Overviews, and being one of the cited sources is a new, valuable kind of visibility. Here’s how they work and how to show up. For the wider shift they belong to, see what AI search is and how it changes SEO.

What AI Overviews actually are

An AI Overview is Google answering your query directly on the results page, in its own words, and naming a few sources it drew from. Their reach expanded fast, then steadied. According to a Semrush analysis of more than 10 million keywords reported by Search Engine Land, AI Overviews grew from about 6.5% of queries in January 2025 to a mid-year peak near 25% in July, then settled back to under 16% of queries by November. The same study found them spreading beyond purely informational searches into commercial and transactional queries.

For the reader, it means the answer often arrives before any click. For you, it means there’s a new slot to compete for, one that sits above the number-one blue link.

The surprising part: you don’t need to rank first

The instinct is to assume the top-ranked page gets cited. In practice, AI Overviews frequently pull from pages sitting further down the results, not just position one. In an Ahrefs analysis covered by Search Engine Journal, only about 37.9% of the URLs cited in AI Overviews were among the top 10 organic results for the same query, which means roughly two in three cited pages sit outside page one.

Why? Because the system rewards the clearest, most extractable answer, not only the highest-ranked page. Which means, with sharp structure, you can be cited in the answer box even when a competitor outranks you in the normal results. That’s a genuine opening for smaller or newer sites that can’t win the top spot yet.

How to structure for it

Getting cited in an AI Overview uses the same fundamentals as getting cited by any AI, applied with Google in mind.

Lead with a direct, self-contained answer to the question, in about forty to sixty words. Use clear question-style headings and short answers beneath them. Break processes and factors into clean lists. Keep the writing specific and free of filler, so the cleanest version of the answer on the page is yours. There’s a full method in how to structure content to get cited by AI.

And keep doing the off-page work, being a trusted, referenced source is what makes Google comfortable citing you in the first place.

How to measure your presence

You can’t improve what you don’t watch. In June 2026, Google added generative AI performance reports to Search Console, giving sites a dedicated view of their impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date. At launch the reports show impressions only, not clicks or the exact prompts, so treat them as a visibility signal rather than a full traffic picture. Beyond that, run the real questions your buyers ask and note when your pages get cited in the Overview, then track it over time, because it moves. A dedicated walkthrough of the tool lives in our guide to Google Search Console.

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

There are controls that affect how your content can be used in some AI features, but for most sites the practical goal is the opposite, to be cited rather than excluded. Being named in the answer is visibility, even without a click.

Do AI Overviews kill my traffic?

They can reduce clicks on purely informational queries, though the effect is not uniform. The response is to be the cited source, to keep strong content for queries that still need a visit, and to measure mentions, not just clicks. See zero-click search: what it is and how to adapt.

Is being in an AI Overview the same as ranking first?

No. They’re related but separate. A well-structured page can be cited in the Overview without holding the top organic position.
